ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the problems that Polish sociology is currently facing, although they might also be relevant for sociology practiced in other countries. The issues of noticing and not noticing certain phenomena in sociological research and analysis, as well as not noting some social phenomena that occur in sociologists’ immediate environment, are addressed. Accordingly, a version of Eviatar Zerubavel’s cognitive sociology is used, and the cognitive and linguistic context of the identified problems is established. Furthermore, the institutional context of ignoring and overlooking certain problems in the academic world of sociology is analyzed. Additionally, the general sociopolitical context in which sociologists currently operate in the academic world is presented, and it is interpreted using one of Erving Goffman’s concepts, a frame trap. Finally, conclusions are presented on how to deal with the phenomenon of not noticing certain phenomena in sociological research in the institutional environment of Polish sociology.
