ABSTRACT

Intensive reading fits into the language-focused learning strand of a course. The focuses of intensive reading include a focus on comprehension, sound–spelling relationships, vocabulary, grammar and cohesion, information content, and genre. A good intensive reading activity focuses on useful features of the language and on the text, provides useful feedback to teachers and learners, and is easy to make. The chapter looks closely at the various kinds of comprehension questions and their advantages and disadvantages. There are descriptions of a wide range of activities for intensive reading across a range of language features.
