ABSTRACT

The 16 physicists in this section range in time from Michelson, whose experiments paved the way for the paradigm shift from classical physics to quantum mechanics and relativity, through the original developers of quantum mechanics, to those who took the ‘new physics’ for granted and moved on. Their nationalities are varied; truly, the profession of physicist is an international one. Because of this, many have worked together, and most probably knew or had at least met everyone else on this list. Most listed here have won a Nobel Prize, many were involved in the development of atomic weapons, and many have felt a deep sense of responsibility for peace in the world and have been active on its behalf. Their lives and contributions to science make for fascinating reading. All the materials listed are English language (many have been translated) and while relatively few are in print, most are held by many libraries and easily obtained through interlibrary loan.
