ABSTRACT

Recognizing the potential of corpora for English language teaching and learning, researchers in the field anticipated a transformative change, professing a corpusrevolution that canpotentially transform language education. The role that corpora play in English language teaching, three main approaches can be distinguished: corpus-informed teaching, integrated corpus-supported teaching and learning, and self-directed DDL. Finally, corpora have great potential as tools for self-directed or autonomous language learning. In this approach, learners are encouraged to consult corpora outside the language classroom. Corpora in this case are often publicly available or are self-compiled that include texts that represent specific genres or registers relevant for the learners. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
