ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of learners´ uses of corpora in instructed SLA. It sets out to present a critical analysis of how research has examined language learners´ uses of corpora in ELT. I specifically discuss an ecological framework where attention is devoted to the prevailing research methodologies and methods used to investigate learners´ uses of corpora. Particularly, the chapter examines the role of manual logs and computer tracking of learners’ uses when working with language corpora. The chapter discusses future directions of research that involve the uptake of emerging research methods, experimental designs as well as new areas of corpus use such as corpus-aided writing and mobile language learning. This chapter seeks to become the first port for those wishing to obtain a research-informed perspective on the topic.
