ABSTRACT

Since the mid-1980s, the advent of corpora has exerted a significant influence on the field of English Language Teaching, with lexical research being a prime example of how corpus methods and tools can benefit the analysis, description and teaching of foreign languages. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the current state of the art of corpus-based analysis of vocabulary and point to the main strands in this research related to issues such as identification and description of various types of vocabulary (e.g. high-frequency vocabulary or phrasal vocabulary), indirect use of corpus-analysis for pedagogical purposes including analyses of the lexical profile of texts or the development vocabulary-focused teaching materials, and finally direct use of corpora in teaching vocabulary in the form of data-driven learning and computer-assisted language learning. By reporting the latest findings and selecting exemplary studies, the chapter not only provides a comprehensive overview of the current research into the applications of corpora in teaching vocabulary and phraseology, but also points to future directions in this fast-growing line of linguistic inquiry.
