ABSTRACT

The Publishers Trade List Annual (PTLA) lists 1,425 biochemistry books published between 1975 and 1979. Twenty-five publishers produced 85.5 percent of these, with Academic Press and John Wiley the leaders. The figures showed 200 to 300 books added each year. The overall average price of a biochemistry book from one of the 25 major publishers was $34.00. The price is fairly steady at about $33.00 for books published in 1975–1978, but rose 12 percent to $38.00 in 1979. It appears that this rate of increase will continue. A comparison of various sources of information on book publishing shows that biochemistry books are about $ 10.00 more expensive than general medical or science books.
