ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses critical literacy pedagogy and its connection to social justice education (SJE). It highlights the importance of enacting critical literacy as a platform to discuss social justice issues. It considers a framework for practice and addresses key issues in developing an environment conducive to a critical literacy approach. Drawing on this framework, it addresses strategies which enable student teachers and teachers unfamiliar with critical literacy approaches to introduce critical literacy into their practice. The chapter concludes by providing exemplars which centre taking action on social justice issues through a critical literacy approach using both reading and writing. These exemplars detail instructional approaches to critical literacy for both junior and senior primary school children using the socio-political issues of gender stereotyping and homelessness.
