ABSTRACT

Audio description (AD) has been flourishing due to an amalgamation of factors, such as legislation, standardisation, an increasing involvement of users, a growing professionalisation, as well as technological advances. This contribution aims to provide some exploratory insights into the specialisations, internal tasks and application of technologies of AD service providers, particularly in Spain and the United Kingdom. By means of an online questionnaire, a snapshot of the AD market is presented. Results reveal that theatre and museum, along with film and television AD, are the most common specialisations among providers and that user involvement is crucial for the audio description workflow and quality control process.
