ABSTRACT
Due to the exponential increase in audiovisual content offered in a growing number of platforms since the turn of the 21st century, audio description has matured as a field of research and practice within Audiovisual Translation Studies, particularly in the field of Media Accessibility. Still, in practice audio descriptions are “generally created independently in each language and are only seldom translated”. In this chapter, the focus will be placed on existing practices and research in the audio description translation of recorded audiovisual content. In section 1, an overview of the current state of the art of audio description translation and its relation to current legislation and standards will be provided. In section 2, existing research and practice in audio description translation will be outlined. In section 3, new digital platforms and audio description services which are currently available will be explained. In section 4, current and new practices in the audio description translation process will be outlined. In section 5, the future of current research and innovation projects using new technologies and collaborative approaches will be defined. Finally, conclusions will outline the current and expected challenges and opportunities arising from the current practices and research in the translation process for audio descriptions.
