ABSTRACT

Included in this chapter is an introduction to the audio description of live events in Canada such as live theatre, dance, festivals, outdoor entertainment, cultural events and city tours. Written by a practitioner, it includes Canadian perspectives from the field and explores the Canadian AD dialect and advice about anti-racist ways of describing people. This chapter contains tools for descriptive services and a list of programming types. It offers practical and thorough explanations of techniques for producers and audio describers through the inclusion of a producer’s guide to live on-location audio described performances. This is followed by a compiled history of professional Live Audio Description in Canada, examining historical firsts, regional history, and the contributions of blind and partially sighted people in establishing and improving access. Included are future directions, further reading and references.
