ABSTRACT

Audio description in Brazil has developed into a high interest area since the Federal Accessibility Law 10,098 of December 2000 was signed and until the pandemic reached us at the beginning of 2020. The Brazilian AD trajectory of nearly 20 years relied on some decisive actions and strategies from many sectors – academic, professional, receptor and regulatory – which culminated in a notably inclusive context. This chapter aims at providing an overview of how audio description developed in the country in the different media, how it was approached in training and research and how it was introduced and established in the market. Despite all efforts, even throughout the pandemic, accessibility has been facing a lot of setbacks since the new government took over in 2019. Nevertheless, there are still many reasons for optimism as regards audio description in the country.
