ABSTRACT

Participation in physical activity is recognized as one of the most critical factors in healthy lifespan trajectories. As physical activity can take multiple forms, it has the potential to be easily modified and adjusted to individual needs, abilities, health status, and motivations. In this chapter, we consider different aspects related to physical activity in adults with visual impairments (VIs). We provide evidence on its significant role in functional capacity, health, and well-being and analyze what is currently known about physical activity participation and the sedentary behavior of people with VI. In this context, we also review the main factors that have been related to the low levels of physical activity of this group of the population and, most importantly, suggest several strategies that could promote active lifestyles in adults with VI. In this regard, we challenge the research community and entities with responsibilities in public health, to endorse efforts to study and implement measures that can enhance the participation of adults with VI in physical activity and exercise.
