ABSTRACT

People with visual impairments (those who are blind or have low vision) are at a higher risk of obesity than people without visual impairments. While there are organizations and guidelines to make exercise more accessible to people with visual impairments, there is also an opportunity for technology to help when people cannot access spaces that are accessible or exercise classes with accessible instruction. In this chapter, I describe several research efforts to make exercises more accessible to people with visual impairments including uncovering opportunities for technology to help, and specific efforts in making jogging tracks and exercise games more accessible. Finally, I close by discussing future opportunities for technology design and emphasizing the need to include people with visual impairments in the design and evaluation of these novel technologies.
