ABSTRACT

This chapter centers on the areas of youth sports, including sport camps, and outdoor recreation among youth with visual impairments. In this chapter, I begin discussing current research in each of these areas pertaining to youth with visual impairments and then briefly make suggestions for future research and practical implications. Overall, there is little research available that examines either youth sports or outdoor recreation for youth with visual impairments, which may be informed by a lack of opportunity for these ventures for this population. The existing research does show promise in the meaning these experiences can have for youth with visual impairments, however, including socialization, perceived competence, and independence-related benefits. More research, generally speaking, is needed to further examine the benefits of these types of programs for youth with visual impairments and to understand if participation in these programs can have similar positive effects as they do for youth without visual impairments.
