ABSTRACT

The setting of scooter-ladies sex compounds a complex, multifaceted terrain of socially approved sexual activities through which men seek pleasure, young women earn income, and local businesses and hotels yield profits. Commercial sex is a deeply rooted activity in Thailand. It is historically connected with the economic development of certain localities in Bangkok, which were occupied by Chinese migrants since the thirteenth century. The sex industry in Thailand has also drawn the attention of researchers from different fields and disciplines including sociology, cultural studies, public health, gender studies, social psychology, cultural anthropology, and tourism, who have investigated the complexity, ambiguity, and constant transformations in social roles, gendered identities, family obligations, and personal expectations of female prostitutes. Leisure refers to any activity an individual performs during their free time based on available resources and personal abilities with an aim to either achieve satisfaction or self-fulfilment.
