ABSTRACT

The biological revolution brought about by contraceptive pill gave women a fairly effective and reliable way to separate vaginal intercourse from reproduction, having an impact upon human behavior and relationships. With the sexual revolution and normalization of same-sex relations and marriage, great number of sexual practices and identities came “out of the closet.” Some practices seem more mainstream in societies than others. Further, what is considered mainstream in one society at one point in time may not be considered mainstream in another society at another time. For example, most Western societies in one or two generations have moved from treating same-sex relationships as taboo, illegal, or immoral to accepting them as mainstream practice. Although gathering data on kinksters is challenging, publishing has not been a challenge. Play events are more restrictive and need to happen in more controlled environments because kinkster activities may involve nudity, sexual activity, or apparent violence, so obviously they cannot take place in a public forum.
