ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the story of how Experimental Musical Instruments got to be a big success. In the course of those fourteen years and in years following, Experimental Musical Instruments as an organization branched out into several other activities beyond the print journal. Experimental Musical Instruments also had reviews of other organizations and periodicals in related fields. It occasionally reprinted articles that had appeared long ago in various now-forgotten journals – sometimes more for the fun or humor of it than for the intrinsic merit of the writing. One was “The Smell Organ” by Joseph H. Kraus, originally printed in the June 1922 issue of Science and Invention. It describes the work of the French chemist Dr. Septimus Piesse toward the development of his olfactory keyboard. The number of deserving articles that appeared in Experimental Musical Instruments over the years was far greater than what we’ve been able to include in this collection.
