ABSTRACT

Air traffic is highly dependent on weather, but we can expect for the year 2050 that it will no longer be accepted that capacity will drop under bad weather circumstances, like strong wind conditions. A circular runway offers at any time, independent of wind direction, a touchdown point without crosswinds. This circular runway will enable each aircraft to optimize its landing point based on current wind conditions. The circular runway will circumvent the airport so that all infrastructure will be located inside the circle. Since a circle is an efficient shape, the design of the circular runway airport is more compact when compared to a major European airport like Paris Charles de Gaulle. It represents about one-third of its surface. Area development around airports is based on the directions of the runway; the circular runway offers new possibilities for area development.
