ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on academic peer-reviewed research publications regarding sport and education for environmental sustainability. Such literature is in its infancy with only nine manuscripts to date, and reflects the relatively recent inclusion into the curricula of sport education. This chapter provides a discussion on how such education can be conceptualized, its intellectual origins, and some key reasons why it can/should be included in higher education. This chapter evaluates the existing research pertaining to sport and environmental education and offers suggestions for future research in this area. The author argues that the integration of environmental concepts into sport higher education programs is a priority in order to achieve an environmentally sustainable sport sector. Researchers are, therefore, strongly encouraged to fill the knowledge gaps discussed here.
