ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on academic journal research publications pertaining to sport and the safeguarding of air quality. Six key publications in both sport and non-sport academic journals are summarized around two major themes. The first theme is air pollution due to transportation/travel to and from sport events/programs. The second theme concerns air pollution occurring at events that can impact spectator and athlete health. This chapter provides evidence of proactive strategies that can help with mitigation and reduction as well as policies to avoid high pollution conditions. The work outlines the literature gaps and encourages the development of a robust body of literature, including a clear mission for sport to ensure clean air for all spectators and players through education, advocacy, and working with stakeholders to reduce pollution.
