ABSTRACT

The Museum of Broken Relationships is a radical response to increasing discussions in the 1990s about the role of museums in society. It is built upon the most human of feelings – love. And suffering because of it. Love is one of the main principles for the whole culture of humankind, but there has never been a museum on this topic. Now there is. The museum was created from people’s memories, interrupted and ended relationships. It would not be able to operate without the interest and involvement of people. More than a mere museum of memories, it presents a wider picture of people’s varied emotional and social behaviours in different cultures and regions, and thus also possesses rare material for research. Innovation, open-minded thinking, involving the community – these are the reasons why the museum was given the Kenneth Hudson award.
