ABSTRACT

This national museum of art and history was founded in the nineteenth century. Its distinctive building is on a prominent site in Amsterdam. It has undergone its second major redevelopment in a period of about 40 years. The recent work has improved public access and display spaces, and provided some new buildings and amenities for its very large numbers of visitors. The collections are world famous and the demand for public access to them is pressing. The museum maintains exemplary nationwide education programmes and high standards of public communication and a generous Online Public Access system on its website for its very large collections.
