ABSTRACT

Situated in the former shipyards of Gdansk, The European Solidarity Centre tells the evocative story of the Solidarity movement, and, in broader terms, the history of the social, cultural and political opposition and resistance movements that led to the dissolution of the Soviet bloc. The museum’s mission of being ‘a place where history meets the future’, is backed and carried by the creative and self-confident collections gathered, in real time, by a social movement that was aware of its important historical moment. The concept of solidarity frames this contemporary meeting place for exploring the meaning of democracy, citizenship, equal opportunity and social justice.
