ABSTRACT

The museum is housed in a group of buildings ranging in date from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century: Governor’s Palace displays an excellent range of nineteenth-century Russian paintings and twentieth-century and contemporary Russian art. The garden of the palace is Japanese influenced and displays modern sculpture. Much of the icon collection is displayed in the seventeenth century City Palace and a third building houses art from other countries and cultures. There are well-attended public programmes. Music – orchestral and choral – is offered in summer. Behind the scenes are comprehensive documentation and excellent storage and conservation facilities.
