ABSTRACT

The Old Town Museum is a national open-air museum that explores urban history and culture in Denmark through three centuries. The museum applied for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2016 with the creation of a whole new town district, focusing on the post-war period, with 1974 as the key-year. The purpose of the reconstruction of the district was not primarily the preservation of old buildings, but the opportunity to tell stories of urbanisation, of daily life, living conditions and interior styles in Denmark during the seventies. The interiors are narratives with a defined purpose and a specific perspective. Each interior tells a different story, presenting people of contrasting social and cultural backgrounds.
