ABSTRACT

This is a large state museum housed in one of the best preserved late medieval monastery complexes in The Netherlands. Its displays show how The Netherlands were converted to Christianity, what forms it took in the Middle Ages and how, after the Reformation, it divided into different sects and denominations. Great care has been taken to explain and illustrate the bitter religious dissensions that were a feature of life in The Netherlands for generations and that absorbed such a high proportion of the national energy. The museum only became possible when religious bigotry and fanaticism in The Netherlands had largely subsided.
