ABSTRACT

Rijksmuseum Boehaave, located in Leiden, is a museum of science and a museum of the history of science. Exquisite scientific instruments, rarities both natural and technological, and beautiful works of art evoke the sense of wonder that excited scientists in the past and that continues to inspire them today. This is a place where curiosity meets awe. As they ‘meet’ the scientists behind the discoveries, visitors begin to see the world through their eyes. Lowering the threshold for encountering science, the museum invites visitors to weigh in on the unintended consequences and ethical questions raised by scientific advances and inspires today’s younger generation to become tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and physicians – and to cherish the legacy bequeathed to them and celebrated in this museum.
