ABSTRACT

Random sampling of the population would have produced a set of families whose environments were highly skewed and would not have minimized social differences among families. In response to the architect’s request for information about aspects of environment that serves positive purposes in the lives of residents, we first created a frame of reference. The interrelations found between each component of environment studied and relevant behavior will be summarized and then discussed. There is a parallel between some of the findings on housing type and on open space. With respect to housing type, the presence of shared walls was related to a feeling among many that another housing type would permit respondents activities in which they desired to participate. Uniformly, the percentage of participants in the activities listed among people with easy access to community facilities was 20 points higher than among people distant from them.
