ABSTRACT

The aim of the chapter is to show how visual boards both support and can be used to extend beyond a results-based approach. Relying on a large sample of visual boards used in the health and social services care sector in Québec (Canada), this study shows the powerful role of the visual boards used to foster an outcome-based approach. However, this study also suggests developing more elaborate, illustrated visuals that place emphasis on shared values and actions. Such visuals move away from the obsession with achieving results and focus on transmitting meaning for everyone through a relation-based approach, thus overcoming the dehumanization associated with the advent of New Public Management.
