ABSTRACT

Buddhism has a great vision of the eternal harmony of the world. Vajrayana Buddhism was born out of an intellectual search, at the great universities of Eastern India and in Kashmir, in the 1st millennium A.D. By the 13th century, Vajrayana Buddhism travelled through Tibet to Mongolia. The greatest Buddhist king of Mongolia was Zanabazar. Zanabazar created beautiful images of deities in gilt bronze. There was a time when there was no country in South and South-East Asia, East Asia and Central Asia, where Indic deities, the Buddha, Shiva, Vishnu and others, were not revered. Kalmykia is located on the northern branch of the Silk Route and is a place, which is dynamic ever since Buddhist revivalist project began since the disintegration of Soviet order. A great new Buddhist temple called Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni has been built in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia. It has today become a symbol of the identity of the people of Kalmykia.
