ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature to reveal an approach to understanding employability and career development, which will be used as the scholarly foundation that underpins the graduate career narratives presented in the subsequent chapters. Specifically, the review shows that most higher education stakeholders perceive that graduate employability is the possession of knowledge and skills and evidenced via the proxy of employment outcomes. The chapter continues to present a combined corpus of literature from different fields that suggest employability is a lifelong process and involve social, cultural, identity, economic, and psychological capitals on top of knowledge and skills. It argues that employability should be viewed as a lifelong process and part of complex career development, which will fit better into the current changing landscape of our societies.
