ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) teacher educators as a specialized group of professionals who practice and develop at the nexus of teacher education and higher education. The significance of teacher educators has been celebrated worldwide as “quality teacher preparation depends on quality teacher educators”. Against the backcloth of globalization, the status of English as a lingual franca with its colonizing history has turned the field of English language teaching and teacher education into a complex, contested site fraught with power negotiation and struggle in relation to critical issues such as race and gender in various English as second/foreign language contexts. TESOL teacher educators can work in specialized institutions such as teacher training colleges funded by the local government. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
