ABSTRACT

This chapter explores two topics: an art therapy group for pregnant women who are at risk for perinatal depression, and a research film that was created about a public exhibition on pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and stillbirth. The author examines several sociocultural constructs and weaves personal experiences, revealing a connection to the collective journey of women. The film shows themes of private shame and guilt that were common to all the women prior to sharing their stories. Through moving their private stories into the public, the women found validation and a sense of transformation within community that resulted in raising awareness and making the invisible visible.
