ABSTRACT

In today’s digital world, organisations cannot achieve the productivity and competitiveness they need without electronic records management systems (ERMS). While many ERMS are introduced to the market with new functions and features, usability feature of these products directly affects the efficient and effective use of all other functions and features. If the users cannot perform their work with less effort using ERMS, the systems remain idle and work efficiency decreases. To achieve good usability, ERMS should be tested periodically to uncover usability problems in the software development process, in the certification process, before the software purchase decision is made, and after the use of the software. In this study, the heuristic evaluation (HE) method was applied on a Turkish university’s ERMS. The method application techniques, strengths and weaknesses of the method, and types of information that can be gathered are explained. Applying the HE method, a list of ERMS usability criteria was developed and tested in two iterations. Finally, the most challenging factors affecting ERMS users are discussed.
