ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in part 3 of this book. The part focuses on the documentary form. It investigates the appraisal of websites. The part then examines the presentation of cultural heritage objects online through the web-based systems of cultural institutions – museums, libraries, and archives. It also identifies the metadata about the online cultural heritage resources and analyzes with accessibility, interoperability, and interconnection possibilities. The part investigates another type of digital resource – print masters. It focuses on long term preservation of digitally signed records and discusses the challenges of expiring validity of digital signatures. The part discusses the European legal deposit practices in view of the ingest automation of digital print masters, ensuring quality control, provision of bibliographic metadata for storage and retrieval, and preservation. Although websites can be crawled and their snapshots archived the retention and disposition periods of different parts of a website may be different.
