ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of the records manager and archivist in an open government environment and considers the recordkeeping context of new expectations and demands on access to public records, for example as open government data and the proactive release of public sector information. It examines what the function of a records manager in the public sector currently is, and considers what it ought to be in future, in the new context of open data. Using examples from case studies carried out in the health service, local government public sector, and higher education environments from the UK and Sweden, the chapter addresses the enhanced role and skills needed by records managers and archivists to play their full part in this environment. It seeks to identify what is needed for a future recordkeeping profession, to ensure that the information they provide access to is authentic, reliable, trustworthy, and not in breach of sensitivity concerns.
