ABSTRACT

Taking the case of renewable energy technologies (RETs) and products, this paper explores opportunities for trade and cooperation between India and China in the renewable energy sector. The study is especially important considering growing concerns over energy security and commitments to global climate change mitigation efforts. The analysis is carried out using data collected from the International Trade Centre based on the Harmonized System of commodity classification at the six-digit level for the time period 2001–2017. The analysis so carried out helps us argue that bilateral trade between the two countries in RET products has grown at a faster rate than total trade. China is much ahead of India in export competitiveness in RET products. Nevertheless, there definitely seems to be huge prospects for both countries to further deepen their trade relations through trade in RETs.
