ABSTRACT

In 2016, 56.78% of China’s total population lived in urban areas, compared to 31.16% in India. The chapter is based on reports from both countries’ governments, international organizations like the World Bank United Nations Development Programme, and Civil Society Organizations/Non Government Organizations, as well as existing research and case studies. This chapter analyzes socioeconomic issues and their impact on urban China and India, examining population, economic growth and development, water, poverty, housing, slums, living conditions, health facilities, infrastructure, transport, environment, urban reform, etc.
