ABSTRACT

In the context of migration data, its utility is the ability to provide information for mainstreaming migration into policy, planning frameworks and development initiatives. Thus, migration data enables migration policies and programmes to be evidence-based. This chapter presents an overview of the status of Migration Statistics in Africa, including trends, gaps and opportunities. Data collection challenges are presented. The chapter suggests strengthening research and data collection on the transfer of remittances to strengthen its contribution to national, regional and continental sustainable development. To achieve sustainable development informed by up-to-date data for migration, there is a need to build synergy, collaboration and harmonization of African Migration Statistics Institutions at national, regional and continental levels. As African countries increasingly become technologically savvy, there is potential in using big data and innovative data sources to complement traditional data sources on migration.
