ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses contemporary African im/migration to, and African im/migrants in, Europe and North America. It examines the historical, political, economic, and cultural factors that drive contemporary African migration to North America and Europe. The chapter claims that contemporary African immigration to North America and Europe is characterized by diversity of destination, gender inclusion, and mixed socio-economic locations of contemporary immigrants. It is asserted that African im/migrants’ aspirations are consistent with those of other peoples in the world, contrary to engrained notions in the West that African migration to the West is peculiarly driven by poverty and underdevelopment of the African continent. The chapter concludes that African migration to Euro-American countries is not a zero-sum game because there are both costs and benefits associated with it.
