ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a pedagogy for social justice education (SJE). It provides an overview of intellectual and activist traditions that SJE pedagogy draws upon and tracks how these ideas have been taken up and applied within SJE communities of practice. The chapter then elaborates on five pedagogical elements to explain how an SJE practice should: 1) consider the roles of facilitators and participants in the learning community; 2) foster an inclusive learning community; 3) center an analysis of systems of oppression and how they operate in society and in the classroom; 4) define goals, learning objectives, and evaluation mechanisms; and 5) utilize collaborative and active learning.
