ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we argue that sexism, heterosexism, and trans* oppression are three systems of oppression based on power hierarchies and false binaries of gender and sexuality. We begin by explaining key terms, then we provide our rationale for addressing sexism, heterosexism, and trans* oppression together as systems that are intricately linked rather than discrete, singular forms of oppression. We then present the historical legacies and social movements that shaped contemporary views about sex, gender, and sexuality, followed by contemporary examples of sexism, heterosexism, and trans* oppression. Finally, we provide a four-part curriculum design that addresses sexism, heterosexism, and trans* oppression together in the first and fourth quadrants, with options for Quadrants 2 and 3 that focus on sexism, heterosexism, or trans* oppression separately. We conclude the chapter with pedagogical considerations for the facilitation and design of educational experiences around sexism, heterosexism, and trans* oppression.
