ABSTRACT

This introduction provides contextual information and the premise for the writing of A For Adoption. As a project that initially started out as a guide for professionals, it evolved into a more accessible book for anyone connected to adoption. It also includes the quotes of parents, young people, and professionals and highlights many of the real issues facing adoptive families and those who support them.

At the time of writing this book, there was considerable interest in children and young people’s mental health and proposed reforms to children’s services. However, as the introduction explains, many adopters continue to feel that their plight is not understood and that they have been left on their own to care for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in society. The tension between the state and adoptive families is explored throughout the book, beginning with this introduction, showing that difficult conversations are welcomed rather than avoided.
