ABSTRACT

Terminology management is a key element of global language asset management and an important aspect of the international language strategy of enterprises. It also contributes to international knowledge sharing and the construction of discourse systems. Since the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, the increasing exchanges and cooperation between China and the countries along the Belt and Road have presented new challenges and higher requirements for language services. The newly born problems in terminology management may hinder the improvement of translation quality and thus will hinder the international dissemination of knowledge, which is not conducive to the international development of enterprises. In this study, a questionnaire survey is conducted and distributed to language service enterprises in China to study their terminology management practices. The results show that domestic language service companies are faced with various problems, such as insufficient attention to term management value, low popularity of terminology tools, low level of term management standardization, a lack of term management professionals, and the need to improve term management technology. This study also puts forward corresponding proposals aiming to enhance the current status of terminology management in Chinese language service enterprises and related domestic research on terminology management. We hope that this study will encourage more industrial associations, professionals, and scholars to pay greater attention to terminology management practices and research.
