ABSTRACT

This chapter describes research on intercultural communication in two Dutch municipalities, Horst aan de Maas and Peel en Maas in Limburg, the Netherlands, between the local governments and Polish migrants. The communication processes were researched by Boruta (2015) and Wołoszyn (2017) as graduation internships at the Meertens Instituut in The Hague, and data for their analyses were collected during ethnographic fieldwork. The aim of the first pilot research was to describe the linguistic and cultural practices of the Polish and local communities in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas. In the second study, Wołoszyn looked for practical solutions to improve communication and mutual understanding between the Polish residents of Horst aan de Maas and Peel en Maas and local governments. The chapter describes the assignment the researchers received, the researchers’ method and the results as well as struggles and obstacles the researchers encountered in the data collection process.
