ABSTRACT

This essay situates Elizabeth Inchbald's (1753–1821) “Remarks” on King Lear as exemplary of her approach to Shakespeare's works among her introductory prefaces for Longman's British Theatre series. It focuses in particular on Inchbald's distinguishing interest in the art of live performance and on her willingness to engage with the Restoration and eighteenth-century adaptations of Shakespeare's plays, which dominated the playhouse repertory well into the nineteenth century.
