ABSTRACT

Lois Weaver (b.1949), a leading contemporary artist in feminist and lesbian performance practice and cofounder of the legendary New York-based queer performance troupe Split Britches, has long been developing formal protocols for engagement that seek to publicly address social and political issues faced by marginal communities intersecting across gender, sexuality, and age differences. Weaver's central objective has been to reimagine institutional spaces and conventional formats for conversation within new dramaturgies of care. Her innovative pedagogical and practical models serve to foster new strategies for diverse communities to come together and engage in difficult or sensitive subject matter while addressing aspects of authority, identity, and citizenship through collective performance.
