ABSTRACT

For the 2018 Association for Theatre in Higher Education annual meeting, conference organizers invited Latinx theatre artists and sisters Gabriela Serena Sanchez and Quiara Alegría Hudes (b.1977) to deliver a keynote address. Their joint presentation, “Pausing and Breathing,” reflects the “high tide of heartbreak” that Tony and Pulitzer winner Hudes has experienced working in the “upper echelons” of the professional theatre, as well as the profound local impact of Sanchez's successful community-based company, Power Street Theatre. The sisters’ revelations leave us not only with challenges but also with “heartening” realizations for twenty-first-century theatre in the United States.
