ABSTRACT

The chapter analyses the political use of sport in Italy in the post-World War II period, focusing on the ruling Christian Democratic (DC) party. It analyses the peripheral sports structure of the Christian Democratic party (the Libertas), and sets out the links between the government and the Italian Olympic committee. The research starts from the in-depth study of unpublished sources that at present have never been used for the production of scientific papers or other publications, reviewed at the Sturzo Institute's Archive. In addition to the Sturzo Archive, the also unpublished study of the Giulio Andreotti Archives is fundamental. It allows us to understand the importance that the Roman statesman assigned to sports and the centrality it had in the political-diplomatic life of the most important Italian politician after World War II.
